Anatomy of an Idea

In 1543, a book proposed that the Earth moves around the Sun. But a book is never just its author's idea. It is printed, framed by other hands, corrected by people whose names nobody kept. This piece follows one real copy of that book and shows, step by step, what history did to the idea it carried.

The book is De revolutionibus orbium coelestium by Nicolaus Copernicus, printed in Nuremberg in 1543. The copy is now held by the University Library in Toruń, Poland.

The story in five moments

1A manuscript becomes a book

A drifting cloud of letters settles into lines, then into identical copies. In 1543 the printing press turned one scholar's manuscript into a reproducible object. From now on the idea exists in many bodies, all the same, at least for a moment.

2Someone frames it

An envelope of dust forms around each copy and cools its light. Before the treatise begins, an unsigned preface tells the reader that its hypotheses “need not be true nor even probable”: they are just tools for calculation. Not a word of the book is changed, but the way it is read is. The preface was later attributed to the theologian Andreas Osiander, who oversaw the end of the printing.

3The book admits its own mistakes

A small leaf attaches itself to one copy and lights up. The printer added a printed list of errors, page by page and line by line, covering the first 146 of the book's 196 leaves, and asked readers to correct their copies by hand. The Toruń copy still has this leaf at the end.

4An unknown hand corrects it

Streams leave a vortex and touch the book; some letters change and stay marked. In the 17th or 18th century, someone, most likely a librarian, went through the Toruń copy and carried the printed corrections into the text: dozens of them, across more than thirty pages, ticking them off one by one. This copy now differs from its twins.

Read the library's description in English

“…a closer look at individual pages shows traces: corrections, crossings-out, word substitutions. This is nothing other than a correction of the text, made probably in the 17th or 18th century by the hand of a reader unknown to us or, more likely, a librarian, following the errata, which the Toruń volume preserves at the end of the work. Through this painstaking work, corrections numbering in the dozens were introduced on more than thirty pages of the volume, sometimes signalled in the margin by a correction sign and also recorded in the errata itself.”

5The corrector disappears

The vortex scatters and leaves an empty ring. The book survived: from the library of the Duke of Prussia in Königsberg to Toruń after the Second World War. Its corrections survived too. The name of the person who made them did not.

How this piece was made

Every transformation you see is triggered by a documented event in the life of the book. What is invented is the form: the letters, the motion, the number of copies and the position of the marks are artistic choices, not measurements. Where history has no answer, the piece shows an empty space rather than filling it in.
